Dubois Basement is pleased to announce an exhibition of new objects by Laith Karmo. Theories showcases range of vessels and sculptures in carved wood and ceramics. The objects present as a query into existential questions about our place in the world since the dawn of human kind.

These ponderings have become the foundation for many belief systems and driven the people to create monuments, buildings and objects. In a similar way Karmo employs his object making process to reflect on the birth of theology. Hereby the work has a sense of ritual embedded and could be understood as ceremonial, representational and functional at the same time.

Use value and spirituality oscillates thematically in each piece and becomes most visibly coupled at the handles of Karmo’s vessels where an eye motif (a universal symbol for reflection) is merged with ergonomic handles of modern day containers.

Hereby Karmo’s new body of work embraces the dichotomy between objects of utility and contemplation and makes clear the shared territory they embody. The work is both of the earth and of the mind, bringing forth the idea that neither exists in isolation. Instead the work seems to suggest a sense of quotidian spirituality where the practice of the everyday becomes coupled to the fundamental questions we have to the world we live in.

Laith Karmo is a Detroit, Michigan based ceramic artist. He has earned a Bachelor of Fine Art at the College for Creative Studies, in Detroit, Michigan and a Master of Fine Arts in Ceramics, from Cranbrook Academy of Art, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan.
